Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Field View Primary School, we believe that the early years are an important time in every child’s development. Our Nursery and Reception provide a welcoming, nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel safe, happy and confident as they begin their school journey.

We recognise that every child develops at their own pace. By building strong relationships with families, we aim to give children the best possible start to their education.

This page provides information for parents and carers about the Early Years Foundation Stage, statutory assessments and how we support children’s development.

What Is the Early Years Foundation Stage?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the statutory framework for the learning, development and care of children from birth to five years old.

It sets out the standards that early years providers must meet to ensure children learn and develop well, are kept healthy and safe, and have the knowledge and skills they need as they grow.

The framework covers seven areas of learning and development:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

At Field View, our EYFS curriculum is carefully planned to provide children with a broad range of experiences and opportunities to learn through play, exploration and adult-led activities.

You can find more information about what and how we teach on our EYFS Curriculum page.

EYFS Assessments

Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)

The Reception Baseline Assessment is a statutory assessment completed by children within the first six weeks of starting Reception.

It is a short, practical assessment carried out individually with a familiar adult. Children complete a range of age-appropriate activities involving early mathematics, language and communication.

What do parents need to know?

  • The assessment is completed during the first six weeks of Reception.
  • It takes approximately 20 minutes.
  • Children use practical resources and respond to simple questions.
  • There is no pass or fail mark.
  • Children do not need to prepare or practise beforehand.

The main purpose of the assessment is to provide a starting point for measuring progress across primary school. It is not used to judge individual children’s ability or determine their future learning opportunities.

We ensure that the assessment is completed in a calm, supportive and familiar environment.

Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP)

At the end of Reception, teachers complete the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP).

This statutory assessment provides a summary of each child’s development and achievements at the end of the EYFS.

Children are assessed against 17 Early Learning Goals across the seven areas of learning.

For each goal, children are assessed as either:

  • Expected: The child has reached the expected level of development.
  • Emerging: The child is still working towards the expected level of development.

These judgements are based on teachers’ knowledge of each child, gathered through everyday learning, play, observations and interactions throughout the year. Children do not sit formal tests for the EYFS Profile.

What Happens with the Results?

Parents and carers receive information about their child’s EYFS Profile at the end of Reception.

The information is also shared with Year 1 teachers to support a smooth transition into Key Stage 1 and ensure that children’s individual needs continue to be met.

We recognise that children develop at different rates. The EYFS Profile helps us celebrate achievements, identify next steps and ensure every child receives the support they need to continue making progress.

Working in Partnership with Families

Parents and carers play a vital role in children’s early learning and development.

At Field View, we value strong relationships between home and school. We encourage families to share information about their child’s interests, experiences and achievements so that we can build a full picture of their development.

Throughout Nursery and Reception, we keep families informed about their child’s progress and provide opportunities to discuss learning, celebrate achievements and identify next steps.

If you have any concerns about your child’s development, please speak to their class teacher. We are always happy to listen and work together to provide appropriate support.

Supporting Your Child at Home

Everyday experiences provide valuable opportunities for children to learn and develop.

Simple activities such as sharing stories, talking together, singing songs, counting objects, playing games and exploring the outdoors can make a real difference.

We encourage families to:
  • Read and share stories together every day.
  • Talk about everyday experiences and encourage questions.
  • Support independence with dressing, toileting and personal belongings.
  • Play games that involve counting, sorting and taking turns.
  • Encourage outdoor play, creativity and exploration.
  • Celebrate effort, achievements and growing independence.

Learning does not have to involve worksheets or formal activities. Talking, playing and spending time together are some of the most valuable ways to support young children.

Early Years Funding and Charges

At Field View Primary School, we offer 15 hours of funded early education for all eligible three- and four-year-olds, with 30 funded hours available to families who meet the eligibility criteria. Additional paid Nursery sessions may also be available, subject to availability.
